I was reluctant to try this because of the bad reviews, but I tried it and found the shortcode you have to use: [yith_similar_products].
You just have to make sure you go to YITH Plugins (in the sidebar) > Recently Viewed Products and change the settings to show "Only viewed products" and it does the trick!

It does not show exactly what products were viewed recently. It shows products related by tags and categories to what was viewed previously, so you see random products instead.

Unfortunately this plugin doesn't really show 'recently viewed' products as you'd expect, but instead products similar to those recently viewed. This means it doesn't really do the job it purports to do.
